In fact, a survey conducted by the Associated General Contractors of America found that 70% of construction companies in the United States, report a “staffing crisis” and trouble filling much-needed positions. The skilled labor shortage in this country adds extra costs to many projects thus slowing down the current boom time in the industry. Baby boomers are retiring in record numbers and many employers in the building trades have struggled to hire qualified replacements. Add to that the fact that most high schools have eliminated shop classes and other vocational training opportunities while focusing more on those students who are college bound. This has employers from our industries wondering where the next generation of skilled trade professionals will come from, who will be teaching, qualifying, and certifying them and how can we help ensure the future success of our businesses. The bottom line is, that there are needs on both sides.
